Maria's List is named after the legendary Mazatec sabia, or shamanic healer, María Sabina.
She gained international recognition for her ceremonial use of psychedelic mushrooms after R. Gordon Wasson, an amateur ethnomycologist, participated in one of her veladas, or healing rituals, in 1955 and later published an article about it in Life magazine. María is often credited with introducing psilocybin to the Western world.
Sadly, María was ostracized by her community for sharing her wisdom. As a member of our team who carries the Mazatec lineage today puts it, "María walked, so we could run." Naming this directory after her is our small way of honoring her legacy.
